#7404 SANDBLAST VOLCANO WITH VINTAGE BAKELITE
  • Weight:  23.7 oz.  (104 grams)
  • Length:  5-7/8"
  • Height:  2-3/8"
  • Bowl depth:  2"
  • Bowl diameter:  13/16"
  • Stem:  Vintage Hand Cut Ebonite
  • Tenon:  White Delrin
  • Comments:  The blast turned out to be just super and the bottom of the pipe is outstanding.  The birds eye and grain appear to have depth.  Stained to match the stem material, I feel this is a rather attractive piece.  The shape makes this pipe very comfortable in the hand and the balance makes the pipe feel quite light.

  • Comments:  Being one that loves to blast pipes, this was a dream piece of briar.  The rings are spot on, from the front of the bowl to the mortise.  They flow and are unbelievably symmetrical.  For some reason this piece caused me fits.  This was due to knowing the potential within this piece of briar.  It rewarded me with a piece that I could do with a natural finish and I find myself extremely pleased.  Gottta tell 'ya.............I'm having FUN!  The Cumberland I'm currently using is fantastic, it is beautiful Ebonite!

  • Bowl diameter:  13/16"

  • Comments:  This pipe was a joy due to the ring grain and with the flow of the rings toward the heel of the pipe.  This piece fits my hand like a glove and the balance is just dandy.  It has a subtle contrast that will only improve with age.  Ring grain billiards are not the easiest and this one fell right into place.

BRUCE A. WEAVER & TODD M. JOHNSON BOXED SET OF MATCHED BILLIARDS  $1750  SOLD!
  • Weight:  2.2 to 2.3 oz.  (62 to 65 grams)
  • Length:  6"
  • Height:  2"
  • Bowl depth:  1-3/4"
  • Bowl diameter:  13/16"
  • Stems:  Hand cut vintage Bakelite
  • Stem embellishment:  Elephant Ivory
  • Tenons:  White Delrin
  • Comments:  Custom box, leather lined, briar piece sandblasted in box lid with BAW/TMJ.  At times, Todd and I are commissioned to make a matched set.  They are never identical, since pipe makers have their own interpretation and styles.  In this set, I have to be honest, mine is far superior to that Johnson fellow!  This is a wonderful set, created from two carvers that are rather competitive.  Mine is the better pipe!!!  This is a wonderful set of billiards presented in a custom case (I did most of the work on the case, Johnson is so lazy).  I love to outshine Johnson!

#6390 TALL SANDBLAST BILLIARD  $550
  • Weight:  3.6 oz.  (102 grams)
  • Length:  7-3/4"
  • Height:  3"
  • Bowl depth:  2-3/4"
  • Bowl diameter:  13/16"
  • Stem:  Hand cut Ebonite
  • Tenon:  Delrin
  • Comments:  This is my version of a Dunhill LC.  Although this is quite a hefty piece the balance is wonderful and the hand feel is superb.  The blast on this piece has strong aesthetics and the ring growth flows into the stem.  I oriented the briar so the grain would flow toward the heel and this gives the piece a nice flow.  The photos do not show the contrast stain well due to the dark color, but there are deep red hues which look fantastic in sunlight.  This piece will patina to a warm two tone.

  • Cap embellishment:  Boxwood
  • Stem embellishment:  Boxwood
  • Stem:  Hand cut Ebonite
  • Tenon:  Delrin
  • Comments:  Tedious?  You betcha ya!  Fun?  More than I should be allowed!  Ring grain?  Yep and freakin' cool!  I was so pleased that I was able to keep some of the boxwood bark, which can be seen on the side of the bowl edge.  Should I have stained this chartreuse?

#6384 PIPADELIC VOLCANO  $(To be honest, if you have to ask, it's not affordable)
  • Weight:  2.8 oz.  (79 grams)
  • Length:  6-3/8"
  • Height:  2"
  • Bowl depth:  1-13/16"
  • Bowl diameter:  3/4"
  • Comments:  Wonderful ring grain volcano.  I honestly can't think of anything else to say about this piece, it's just another sandblast volcano, but I will try.  I find the lines conservative and the shape likewise.  The symmetry is spot on and the hand feel is superb.  The blast has created a flow like feature that mimics the flow of lava.  I worked diligently to color the lava flow from the eyes of Timothy Leary.  Crafted from Mimmo briar this piece was hand picked for the growth rings.  The stem material is actually five different materials slapped together with  a hatchet and whittlin' knife (I whittled while rocking on the front porch).  The colors came from dyes I made from wild fruits and berries while foraging for truffles with my pet pig Fido.  Unfortunately he is only good at finding poison oak and poison ivy, but the berries make a wonderful red dye.  The sand used to blast was from Three Mile Island, which was actually melted sand that became glass and was crushed into blasting material.  Certainly the bowl can be coated at request of buyer.  I have a new bowl coating that is absolutely neutral.  After years of trials I have found that cremated ash from holy yaks from Djibouti, mixed with blessed water from the Ganges River and charcoal I make from sassafras wood to be neutral and totally................sorry, the rest is proprietary.  The inspiration for this piece came from wanting to express my conservative view on pipe making.  For long, it has been my belief that pipes have migrated away from classic shapes and into an arena of weird.  The shapes being created today have too many curves and lines.  I simply wanted to make a classic shape that was conservative and to be enjoyed without making a statement.

#6383 RING GRAIN SANDBLAST LOVAT  $425
  • Weight:  1.6 oz.  (45 grams)
  • Length:  6-9/16"
  • Height:  2"
  • Bowl depth:  1-13/16"
  • Bowl diameter:  3/4"
  • Stem:  Hand cut Ebonite
  • Tenon:  Delrin
  • Comments:  It's so much fun to pick a piece of briar and to orient for a ring grain, a difficult task for a billiard since the growth pattern is normally somewhat contrary.  This one has a contrast stain that I find very appealing and should color beautifully.  I mention the coloring of the wood since my method of blasting allow the briar to actually breath due to slightly more porosity versus conventional blasting.

Image:

#6382 SANDBLAST POKER WITH BOXWOOD  $525
  • Weight:  1.7 oz.  (48 grams)
  • Length:  6-9/16"
  • Height:  3"
  • Bowl depth:  2-3/8"
  • Bowl diameter:  3/4"
  • Stem:  Hand cut Ebonite
  • Tenon:  Delrin
  • Comments:  Spectacular tight ring grain that is 360 degrees.  This piece is a sitter and has a wonderful hand feel, weight and balance.  This piece sports a nice boxwood cap, giving the appearance of a calabash.  Boxwood is a wonderful wood and is such a pleasure to work, the colors and grain is second to briar.  I can just envision one sitting back reading and enjoying a favorite blend.  This piece exudes relaxation and pleasure.

#6381 LONG PENCIL SHANK CUTTY WITH "OB" FINISH  $425
  • Weight:  .7 oz.  (19.8 grams)

  • Bowl depth:  1-5/8"
  • Bowl diameter:  11/16"
  • Stem:  Hand cut cumberland Ebonite
  • Tenon:  Stainless steel
  • Comments:  Shank tapers to 3/8”, at the mortise.  Finished with my “Old Blastard” (OB) finish.  This gives the look and feel of a piece that has been enjoyed, offering a wonderful hand feel.  Part of the plateau shows on the rim and is aesthetically pleasing.  Very difficult pipe to make due to length and diameter of the shank.

  • Comments:  There are a couple of wonderful things about this piece.  For my 60th birthday, one of my dear friends gifted me a Dunhill Cutty.  The Cutty was simply "spot on".  One of the most beautiful pipes I have ever seen.  Although the Cutty seems to be an easy standard shape, it is by no mean so.  I was so taken by such a thoughtful gift, I decided to replicate the piece.  This lead to trying to replicate the sandblasted finish and I'm thrilled to say it is going to be added to one of my finishing options.  I find the finish to be comfortable and aesthetically pleasing.  Look for more pieces with this finish.  Thank you my dear friend for your kindness!

  • Comments:  This was one of those blocks of briar that rarely avails itself to make this shape, very rarely.  I had been wanting to make a long shank volcano for quite some time and really wanted to blast this one, but the grain was just too nice and was destined to be a smooth.  The stem is vintage Bakelite and feel it was the perfect choice for this piece.

#6346 MAGNUM BILLIARD NATURAL SANDBLAST WITH IVORY

  • Comments:  For about a year, while looking through my briar to find a block for the next shape, I would continue to pick up this block of briar having a Magnum Billiard stare at me.  It just took some time to acquiesce to the blocks calling.  This is a true Magnum and having a block of briar this large is not the norm.  To be able to leave this as a natural finish was an added bonus.  The  elephant ivory has some wonderful grain and is substantial in size.
